Cairns (Day 8)   Leave a comment

Saturday, 24 August, 2013

Today was our last day in Northwest Queensland, but we still had a 200km drive from Cape Tribulation down to Cairns airport, so it was an early start, well for two of us it was! We packed, had breakfast in the cafe and were on the road by ten. The sky was still a bit grey on the way down to the ferry crossing, but as soon as we crossed the Daintree River, the sun came out, strange!

It was a nice drive down through the sugar plantations around Daintree and Mossman, then past Port Douglas and the scorched hillsides to the north of Palm Cove. We had given ourselves plenty of time to get to the airport just in case there were any dramas along the way, so we had enough time to drop into the other main beach resort to the north of Cairns, Trinity Beach, for a look around. My impressions of Trinity Beach were that it was an excellent place to stay, but I much preferred the layout and feel of Palm Cove. Our last act before heading into the airport was to fill up the hire car and to buy some sandwiches for the plane journey back to Sydney.

Dropped the car back into the allotted space in the car park and returned the key to the hire car desk. I’m always a bit worried when I return a hire car, as I’m convinced that they will try to sting you with some ridiculous charge for a scratch or dent that they say wasn’t there when you took the car out. I needn’t have worried as the lady behind the counter simply asked me if the car had been filled up and wether we had had a good time. In fact, within an hour of dropping the car off, i had received an email from the car hire company informing me that everything was fine and the account was now closed. As the sun was still blazing down and with the thought of Sydney/Canberra still being cold at this time of year, we took the opportunity to sit outside the airport terminal, once we had checked the suitcase in.

There were no delays in boarding the flight and we took off as scheduled mid-afternoon bound for Sydney. Lawrence had previously offered to pick us up at the airport, so it was a relevantly smooth pick-up and journey back to their place. Decided to make the trip out to a Thai restaurant in Padstow instead of ordering a take a way. When we arrived, the place was buzzing, but the staff managed to find us a table where we ordered way too much food. Instead of being of the food being served up half an hour after it had been cooked, it tasted so much better fresh from the kitchen. Once we arrived back, Ciara went straight to bed while we stayed up watching some crap movie on the telly.
