Raiders v St. George (Again)   Leave a comment

Canberra doesn’t get many top sporting events, so when the chance comes along, I like to mosey on down and take a look. Today the Raiders (The local Rugby League team) were playing their first home game of the 2013 season against St. George Illawarra Dragons. The observant ones amongst you may recognise the away team as the same outfit that went to watch at the back end of last year’s season. So it was with some excitement that I pitched up to the Canberra Stadium at Bruce this evening to see if the ‘the hoodoo’ could be continued.

Purchased my inner bowl ticket ($38.00) at the ticket office outside the ground and located my seat in time to catch the start of the game at 6.30pm. The Raiders have had a couple of tough away games to start the season, losing both of them quite heavily, so it was with a bit of a relief to all present when the half time whistle blow and the Raiders were 6 – 5 to the good. I’ve found down the years, when I’ve been to various Rugby League games in Salford, Bradford, Leeds etc. and here in Australia, is that the fans are always  passionate  about supporting their team, but get along with the opposing supporters. Tonight I was struck by the large number of St. George fans in the crowd and they certainly made their presence felt when the Dragons scored a couple of try’s early the second half to pull them into the lead. However a strong finish by the Raiders saw them run out 30-17 winners to continue the Hoodoo for another year.
