Oktoberfest   Leave a comment

One of the best annual events to happen in Canberra each year is the Oktoberfest run by the German Club  up at EPIC . Last year I missed out on it, but everyone I spoke too who went said it was a great day/evening out. So after my weekly ride around the lake with Glenn and James during which we spotted some girls from Ciara’s school competing in a school’s Dragon boat racing event, Gail and I jumped on the bus into town and after catching a connecting bus to EPIC we arrived at the gates of the exhibition centre.  To be honest, what greeted us there nearly put us off paying our entry fee and going in. As it was about five o’clock when we arrived and the place had been opened since around noon, there were loads of drunken young men hanging around the gates and laying on the grass area outside the main hall. So it was with some trepidation that we paid our entrance fee and walked into the arena where the Oktoberfest was being held.

Inside we found a couple of thousand people enjoying everything you would associate with a German beer festival, Beer (of course!), pig roast, Oompah band etc. We bought ourselves a couple of steins of Lowenbrau and took a tour around the outside of the hall where all the stalls were located. Bumped into a few people from work and also sampled some of the food on offer (Pork Knuckle for me and bratwurst for Gail).

We only ever planned to stay for a couple of hours but due to the fact that the company and beers were good and the atmosphere had improved (All the drunks had either gone home or had been thrown out!) we stayed around till gone ten o’clock and had to get a taxi back into Civic before jumping on the last back to our place.
