Gold Coast (Day 5)   Leave a comment

Monday, 10th September, 2012

Last day of the sunny Gold Coast and I start the day with another walk/run/swim along the beach. I have loved the chance to do this every morning and will miss he sights, sounds and smells of the coast.

As I returned to the apartment complex I enquired, at the reception, as to whether we could check out a little later than the stated 10am time slot. As nobody was scheduled to check into our apartment the receptionist told me that we could delay our departure till after eleven. So instead of the expected mad rush to be out of the apartment we had plenty of time to packed up and loaded the car with the suitcases. We then took our books down to the beach and spent an hour or so relaxing in morning sun.

On the way back to the airport we planned to meet up with the Barry family who have just arrived on the Gold Coast after emigrating from the UK. Gail has been chatting to Alan and Diane, via Facebook, for several months about their plans for their new life in Australia, so it was genuinely exciting to meet up with them at the start of their adventure. Was also hoping to catch up with Christina before she left the Gold Coast for Sydney, but when we contacted her she was busy getting used to the hire car they were using to drive down the coast. Didn’t envy her and her friend’s 12 hour road trip. We did arrange to meet up in Sydney in a few weeks’ time when her dad comes out from the UK to visit.

We arranged to meet Alan, Diane, Chloe, Hollie and Marcus at Sanctuary Cove on Hope Island close to where they had rented a house for a few months while they settled in and find their feet. When we meet, they all looked pretty spent, which was not surprising as they had literally just stepped off the plane into the realisation that they had started a new life down under. We could only spend an hour or so with them before we had to leave for the airport and the flight home.

The rest of the journey back to the airport, plus the flight home went off without any dramas and Steve was waiting at Canberra airport to bring us home.
