Raiders   Leave a comment

There’re four kinds of footy in Australia, Football (Soccer, the Real Thing), Rugby Union, Rugby League and Australian Rules Football (AFL). Canberra has professional teams that play Rugby Union (The Brumbies) and Rugby League (The Raiders). Canberra and the ACT have been trying for years to get teams into the A-League (Australian Premiership) and the AFL, but to date they’ve been unsuccessful in both ventures.

Both the Brumbies and the Raiders play at the same stadium up in Bruce in the northern suburbs of Canberra. Went to see the Brumbies at the start of the season and they’ve been doing well so far this season, leading the Australian conference of the Super Rugby competition with a few games left in the regular season. Tonight, I went to see the Raiders play St George Illawarra at the Canberra Stadium and what a night to turned out to be. Now, the Raiders are a poor team, correction! They are a piss poor team, but they always seem to beat St. George, be it home or away. They call it ‘the hoodoo’ and I think it’s been twelve years seen St. George won in Canberra.

Ciara didn’t fancy it, can’t blame her as it was freezing, so I wrapped up warm and drove down to Woden bus station where I was meeting Barry and to get the free bus that Action Buses put on for every match. Barry had a voucher that got us into the game for half price and we were soon sat in our seats, down at the bottom near the home try line, ready for the match to start.

The Raiders got off to a great start and were soon 6-0 up after they barged through near the post. However, St. George, to everyone’s surprise, pulled the score back to 6-6 with sweeping move from their own half. Most of the play was in the St. George half and by the time half time arrived, The Raiders were 16-6 up and coasting. After a cup of tea to warm us up, we moved seats to get a better view of the expected onslaught down our end of the ground. St. George had other ideas and they obviously had been given the rocket by their coach, as they came out with all guns brazing and by the 70th minute they had completely turned the game around to lead 16-18. The natives were getting restless and it was a good job Ciara hadn’t come with us, as there were a few choice words being shouted in the direction of the home team. But, have no fear, this is ‘The Hoodoo’ we’re talking about and in an exciting last few minutes, The Raiders managed to score and convert a try to win the match 22-18 and send the locals home happy.

Great atmosphere on the bus on the way back to Woden, with a few St George’s supporters who were unfortunate to be sitting on the bus on the receiving end of some friendly banter.

Postscript: I wonder why I’ve come from a city that has a crap RL team, Salford, to another?
