Rain Soaked Sydney!   1 comment

Sunday, 10th June, 2012

The main reason for our trip to Sydney, apart from visiting Barbara & Lawrence of course, was to go to Taronga Zoo for the day. Before we left Canberra, the weatherman said, “For the weekend, Sydney will be cloudy with a slight chance of a shower or two on Sunday.”  WRONG

Woke up this morning and it was lashing it down. Unperturbed,  we had breakfast, waited for Ciara to immerge from her room and got ourselves ready for a day in downtown Sydney. By this time he rain had eased off a little, but we decided to save the visit to the zoo for another day and just go into town, do some shopping and catch the Vivid Sydney Lights spectacular later in the day. So, after getting a lift to East Hills train station and buying our $2.50 Family Fun Day tickets, we boarded the train heading into central Sydney. By the time we got there, was raining again and it looked as though it was set for the day.

From the station we walked up to Pitt Street, which seems to be the main shopping street in Sydney and started to look for a new coat for Ciara. Several hours and many shops later we still hadn’t found the exact coat she was after, so we took a breather in Starbucks for Coffee (Ciara didn’t pay this time!). The rain was really coming down by the time we immerged, so after I got ripped off buying an iPad cover from Apple that I could have bought in Dick Smith’s for $10 less, we jumped on a free bus that took us down to Circular Quay.

The Vivid Sydney Light spectacular is an annual event based in and around the Circular Quay area. Everyone at work was talking about it and as we were in town, I thought it would be a good idea to see what all the fuss was about. Unfortunately, by the time we got off the bus, the rain was biblical and everyone was trying to find some cover in order to view some the major displays. Looking across the harbour, we could make out that the Opera House and the various other buildings were being lit up, but because the rain was so heavy, we could hardly make out what was going on.

Plan B was called for and so we started to walk up though the Rocks, to look for a somewhere to eat and wait out the rain. Unfortunately, everyone else had the same idea and we ended up getting soaked to the skin, looking for anywhere that had a table (See picture below of a not happy Gail!). Finally, after returning the train station at Circular Quay, we decided to return to Barbara & Lawrence’s and grab something to eat there. We tried our best to dry off on the journey back and on finding out that they both hadn’t eaten yet, we decided that we all should visit their local Chinese restaurant before returning home for a few beers.
