Carols by Candlelight   Leave a comment

Another annual Canberra event ticked off the list! Every city seems to have a Carols by Candlelight concert. The bigger ones in Sydney and Melbourne are usually televised and all the big stars rock up to show how caring they are (Yeah right!). Anyway Canberra’s is a bit more sedate, not televised (at least I didn’t see it on the listings page) and is headlined by the Woden Valley Youth Choir, Canberra City Band and a couple of guest artists, who I’ve no doubt are quite famous, I’ve never heard off, Peter Cousins and Rachael Thoms.

The venue was Stage 88 in the commonwealth park (scene of the 20 people watching Julie & Julia (PG) during Floriade) only this time I would say there was a couple of thousand there. Only problem was that we already had our tea, so we turned up at 7.30pm with nothing with us only to find out that most people who were there had brought along picnics, camp chairs, rugs etc.

We looked around for a place to sit but as the place was packed already, we were forced to stand amongst the trees at the back. However, we soon found someone who was handing out song sheets and these little electric candles that everybody seemed to have.

Ciara wasn’t really up for it but after a few of the traditional carols and a bit of cajoling from Gail and me, we were all soon belting out the carols with the best of them. Interspersed with the community singing, we were treated to performances from the choir, band and guest artists. The only problem we had was the fact that once it went dark, the temperature dropped quite dramatically and it was really quite cold by the end of the evening.

The evening was finished off with rosing rendition of ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’ and we dashed back to the car park to beat the rush out of the park by the many people who stayed to the end.
